Air curtain – electric, water and cold for entrance doors and gates
The air curtain produces a vertical air stream above the door opening which separates the interior air from the outside at the open door. It reduces heat losses in winter, protects against hot air in summer and stops dust, exhaust and insects. In shops, service premises and halls with frequently opened doors, the curtain significantly reduces heating costs and improves the comfort of people working at the entrance. In the offer: electrical, water and cold curtains with widths of 60 to 200 cm – brands Sonniger, Ferono and Dimplex.
Types of air curtain
Electrical curtain
The air heats the electric heater – installation requires only 230 V or 400 V power supply, without connection to the c.o installation. This is the fastest solution in the installation for shops, offices, service premises and points where there is no source of technological heat. Heating power in offer: from 3 to 10 kW, with temperature adjustment.
Water curtain
Heat exchanger supplied with water from central heating system or heat node. The cost of operation is much lower than with electric heating, so the water curtain is chosen for facilities with access to cheap heat: halls, warehouses, sales rooms and public buildings. They require supply pipes and – preferably – a valve with a power control actuator.
Cold curtain (no heater)
They produce only an air barrier, without heating the stream. They are used where it counts to cut off the air itself: at entrances to air-conditioned facilities in summer, in cold stores, food establishments and as protection against insects and dust. They use the least energy and can work all year round.
How to choose an air curtain
- Width: The stream shall cover the entire light of the door — the curtain shall be equal to the width of the opening or wider. At wide entrances, two devices are mounted side by side.
- Mounting height: each model has a maximum installation height at which the stream retains efficiency on the floor – typically 2,2–3.5 m for commercial curtains. At the higher gates, industrial curtains with a larger range are needed.
- Heating power: depends on the size of the entrance zone and the frequency of door opening – indicatively 3 kW per door 60–100 cm in a small premises, 6–10 kW with larger sites and intense traffic.
- Power supply: models up to approx. 6 kW are available on 230 V, stronger require a three-phase 400 V power supply.
- Control: wall panel with gear control and heating, door sensor attaching curtain at opening and thermostat maintaining specified entry zone temperature.
Installation rules
- The curtain shall be mounted horizontally, directly above the door opening, as close as possible to the edge of the superstructure,
- the stream shall be directed vertically downwards or slightly tilted outwards (approx. 5-15°),
- nothing must cover the inlet or air outlet – keep the service intervals specified by the manufacturer,
- Electrical curtains with a power exceeding 3 kW shall be permanently connected to a dedicated circuit with security,
- the efficiency of the barrier increases when the curtain works with the door opening sensor – it works only when needed.

Shops and shopping malls, restaurants and restaurants, pharmacies, hospitals and clinics, offices and receptions, warehouses and production halls, workshops, washrooms, publishing windows and air-conditioned facilities, where you have to keep the cold inside in the summer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Electric or water curtain – which one to choose?
The electric is cheaper to buy and easier to install – power is enough. Water has lower operating costs, but requires connection to c.o. installation. When working intensively all day in an object with its own heat source, the water curtain turns faster; with shorter working time and no installation, select electric.
Does the air curtain work in the summer?
Yeah. When the heating is switched off, the curtain works as a cold barrier – it stops air-conditioned indoor air and reduces the influx of hot air, dust and insects. Cold curtains are designed for year-round work without heating.
What width of the curtain to choose for the door 90 cm?
Minimum 90 cm – the stream must cover the entire width of the hole. The curtain narrower than the door leaves a gap on the sides, through which the outside air freely penetrates inside, which removes the sense of its installation.
How much power does the electric curtain use?
As much as the power of the attached heating level – e.g. 6 kW at full power. In practice, the curtain with the door sensor works only during the opening of the door, so the actual wear is repeatedly lower, and the balance is still favourable to heat loss by an unguarded entrance.
How high can you mount a curtain?
This depends on the model – commercial curtains in this category are typically installed up to 2,2–3.5 m. Above this height, the stream loses speed on the floor and the barrier ceases to be sealed; devices with increased range are selected for high industrial gates.
