Ventilation automation – revolution regulators, thermostats, actuators and prestats

Ventilation automation is the control elements of the work of fans, heaters and throttles: revolution regulators, inverters, thermostats, prestats, temperature sensors and actuators. The correct set allows you to adjust the installation performance smoothly, keep the temperature set, protect the heater from overheating and reduce energy consumption. Key selection: The type of regulator must correspond to the type of fan engine – another solution is used for AC engines, other for EC and BLDC engines.

Thyristors (electronic)

The cheapest solution for AC single phase engines. The regulation takes place by cutting off the power supply phase. They are selected only according to the current load – versions from 1.0 A to 10.0 A are available in the offer. Limitation: The engine can work louder and buzz at low speeds, so fan manufacturers often allow this type of adjustment only conditionally.

Transformers

They change the power supply voltage by jumping, without distorting its course. The engine works quieter and cooler, and the life of the windings is higher. This solution is recommended for roof, duct and industrial fans and wherever the engine manufacturer requires voltage adjustment. Single phase versions 230 V and three phase versions 400 V are available.

Inverters (frequency converters)

They change the frequency of the power supply voltage, providing full flow of regulation from several hertz to nominal value, mild start-up and greatest energy savings. They are used in industrial installations, with greater power and where external 0-10 V signal control or master logic is required.

Drivers for EC and BLDC engines

Electronically fused motors have built-in electronics and must not be adjusted with a tyristor or transformer controller – this could damage the system. For these fans, potentiometers shall be used to send the 0-10 V or PWM control signal.

Running switches

Simple two- and three-speed, surface- and surface-mounted regulators, designed for fans with multi-speed winding and for control panels with jumping performance adjustment.

Thermostats and temperature sensors

The room thermostats keep the room warm and control the work of heaters, air curtains and heating and ventilation apparatus. Channel thermostats with a detector placed in the channel control the air temperature of the air, and versions with a wide range of settings provide protection against overheating. Channel resistance probes with 10K characteristics work with ventilation control panels and heater power regulators.

Presostates – pressure control in the installation

The differential presostat compares the pressure before and after the installation element, and after exceeding the set threshold switches the contact. Typical applications: filter dirt signaling, fan confirmation, heater locking in the absence of airflow and control of equipment in the vacuum function. The range of settings is selected to the expected difference of pressures – most often devices operating in the range of several dozen to several hundred bars are used.

Transmission actuators

Rotary actuators drive cut-off and control throttles, grabs and flaps. Back spring versions in case of power outage automatically set the throttle in a safe position – a solution required for outdoor air intakes and water heaters, where it protects the exchanger from freezing. In the selection, the torque adjusted to the throttle surface, the power supply 24 V or 230 V and the type of control: two-way or proportional.

Power regulators for electric heaters

They control the power of canal heaters, adjusting it to the specified air temperature. They work with a thermostat or channel sensor and usually require a locking system to attach without airflow. Single-phase versions of 230 V and two-phase and three-phase versions of 400 V are available – selection according to heating power and power supply.

How to choose automation – order of decisions

  1. Check the type of fan engine: AC or EC/BLDC – this determines the rest of the selection.
  2. Read the rated current and supply voltage from the data plate (230 V or 400 V).
  3. Verify in the fan documentation what type of adjustment the manufacturer allows.
  4. Select a regulator with current supply relative to the load.
  5. Complete the system with safety elements: presostat, anti-freeze thermostat, back spring actuator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the rotary regulator fit every fan?

Nope. Thyristor and transformer regulators only work with AC engines. Fans with an EC or BLDC engine require a 0-10 V or PWM signal driver to connect the voltage regulator to them may damage the engine electronics.

Thyristor or transformer regulator?

The thyristor is cheaper and enough for small home fans. The transformer ensures quieter engine operation and less heat at reduced speeds – it is a choice for roof, duct and industrial fans and whenever the manufacturer requires voltage adjustment.

Why is the fan buzzing when the regulator is connected?

This is a typical symptom of tyristor regulation at low rotations – the distorted voltage course causes vibration of windings. The solution is to increase the minimum revolution or replace the regulator with a transformer or inverter.

What torque actuator select to throttle?

The moment is selected to the throttle area – a number of Newtonometers per square metre of cross-section are taken as indicated by the throttle manufacturer. Versions with a return spring are used for outdoor draws and water heaters.

Does the electric heater require additional security?

Yeah. In addition to the power regulator, the system shall contain a lock that prevents the heater from being fitted without airflow – the most common differential presostat or the contact with the fan regulator – and heat-resistant thermostats.
